I don’t
really understand what to blog…but I will give this a try……..
Here
we go…One gender difference that I have noticed is between the men’s and women’s
NCAA Division 1 basketball rivalry week. Rivalry Week is a week of programming
by ESPN devoted to showing the top rivalries in college basketball. The men’s basketball
programs have been broadcasted and televised every single night of the week
thus far; however, I have not seen any live women’s basketball games. There are
many articles that state the must see games and predictions for NCAA Men’s
Basketball just like the “Bleach Report” I researched. For example, North
Carolina vs. Duke Men’s college basketball is considered one of the most
intense and fierce rivalries in all of sports. Sadly, when will society care
about women’s basketball? As a female basketball player, this is very frustrating….I
wonder if this will ever change??
Amy,
ReplyDeleteYou know I agree with you about the lack of media coverage in women's sports -- the only time I remember when our country was alive and excited about a women's team was the soccer team -- 2 years ago?? World Cup? Men and women alike were cheering and crowded in bars to watch the final games! It was SO cool! I also read that there were more Tweets around this championship than any other time in history (I mean Tweets for ANYTHING!)
BTW: you are definitely on the right track with your blog! Next time, though, include a quote from assigned reading that ties to the experience you are describing. For example, in Lorber's article on Social Construction of Gender, she says: "In a gender-stratified society, what men do is usually valued more highly than what women do because men do it, even when their activities are very similar or the same."
That's a perfect quote for what you were saying!
I agree with you Amy, I don't notice much coverage on female sports in the media. I watch sportcenter almost everyday and I couldn't even tell you who won the WNBA championship last, think it was Minnesota? I think when it comes to women's sports the attention is more focused on international play. Like Dr. Crafton mentioned the women's World Cup team was huge a couple years ago. I also remember a lot of media coverage on the women's gymnastic and track Olympic teams in London this past summer. It would be interesting to compare the popularity between U.S. women's national teams verses U.S. women's international teams.
ReplyDeleteHi Amy,
ReplyDeleteI can understand your frustration. Women's basketball must be a very big part of your life, so receiving some media acknowledgement regarding your sport of choice would be great. Although, we have come a long way with women's sports (volleyball, gymnastics, figure skating etc...), there is still more to be done. I remember being on a basketball team in junior high. First, I wasn't very tall. Second, I wasn't very good at it! So, cheers to you girl :-)
Oh...I forgot...Could you send Nick's blog address to my blog? I have tried his address so many times to reply, and it doesn't work.
ReplyDeleteHere is the address that I have -
